The Drugs Have Invaded my Countertop!
Went to the pharmacy today to get my anti nausea drugs, supposedly this regime of chemo I am doing is not bad in the nausea sense! But I got 3 different bottles of stuff to help me stop nauseaing (is that a word?) I'd hate to see how many drugs one gets with a more nauseating regime! One is a fun one, Ativan, it relaxes you while taking the nausea away, like a little Valium. So you don't really give a shit that you feel like throwing up I guess! ;) One scares me more than chemo, Prendisone (steroid)...I take that the 3 days prior to chemo. If I get a moon face or hump back, that one is out the window!! I rather puke! And then Compazine, good regular anti nausea drug.. If it gets bad, then they will add in Zofran, which I really wanted instead of Compazine, but I think she rolled her eyes, and thought, "another nurse telling me what to prescribe" So we shall see! Then I am awaiting insurance approval for a drug called Nuelasta, which boosts my white blood cells after chemo, so I do not get sick. I have to inject it myself...saves me a trip into Boston! So that is it for now! Check back soon for more updates!

I agree with you about the Zofran. Ok, I know this type of nausea might be different than the pregnancy nausea but the only drug that ever worked for me was zofran (and I tried many). but maybe the compazine will work for you - also there is now a generic zofran so cost shouldn't prohibit it! And if they won't give it to you - I still have a small stash you can have! Also, when I was preg with isabelle they also gave me steriods (I believe it was prednizone) which was "somehow" supposed to help with nausea/puking in pregnancy - but which every book says "Do NOT take when pregnant" - the good news is I never had any of the steroid side effects and I think you will be ok with it too. The ativan will probably help... but too bad they won't give some valium. 10mgs and a rum and coke and you feel just fine! Guess they are not yet prescribing that combination yet.

I love this blog idea Kristin! Now here is the input from the oncology nurse friend...everyone is different...not everyone gets sick...most do not these days with all the preventative antinausea meds that are given...you know your body and mind best...keep an open dialogue with your oncologist and if something is not working for you...call her! The antinausea regimen you have been prescribed is a good one...ativan is the best for anticipatory nausea secondary to chemo and does wonders for altering your perception of nausea...I do not know of anyone who has taken valium for nausea, although it is good for the nerves! Compazine is a good drug..although prednisone is often used for nausea, in this case it is being prescribed to prevent allergic reaction to the taxotere...the moon face and hump back is something people who are on long term/high dose prednisone have to worry about, not you....keep in mind that it may make you ravenous and jittery...may make it hard to sleep those days so be sure to take your ativan at bedtime. Eat bland foods after your chemo and drink plent of liquids, preferably not alcohol...no need to stress your liver and kidneys anymore. Your neulasta will be approved and I know you will have no problem giving it to yourself. If you are able to give yourself a bikini wax, the neulasta will be a piece of cake!
